How ICHRA Plan Selection Works

Learn how employees select individual health insurance through an ICHRA and what needs to happen before coverage becomes active.

An ICHRA allows each eligible employee to select individual health insurance coverage that fits their circumstances.

The employee is responsible for reviewing available coverage and making the final plan selection. Adding an employee to an ICHRA does not select a policy for them.

For coverage to become active, the employee must:

  • Select a qualifying plan

  • Submit the required application

  • Satisfy any initial premium requirement

  • Receive confirmation that the policy is active

Available plans can vary based on the employee's residential location, age, household composition, carrier participation, coverage year, and enrollment path.

The employer's role is to provide accurate eligibility and allowance information, communicate deadlines, and make the applicable enrollment paths available.

Lirvion supports the plan-selection process but does not select a policy for an employee or determine which plan is best for their circumstances.
